Chilling out in Chiang Mai

by Robin Groen

The last stop on our Chinese (ok, Asian) honeymoon was Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. We stayed at the Oriental Siam Resort which we wholeheartedly recommend. It’s luxurious but also private and the owners Pongsri and Peter took so much care to make sure that we enjoyed our time there.

Venturing out into the serious heat, we tried:

    visiting temples (initially impressive)
elephant riding (seriously unnerving, never again)
bamboo rafting (very relaxing, vaguely “Heart of Darkness“)
oxcart ride (bumpy but much safer than the elephants)
quad-bike riding (fantastic, fast and thrill-packed)
traditional Thai dancing (watching rather than doing)
Thai kick-boxing (definitely watching rather than doing)

Official honeymoon over, it’s on to Beijing for one more week of sight-seeing with some rather important visa business thrown in.
